European Insurer Enhances Security and Scalability with CPT Global’s Azure Migration Support
Challenge
A US financial services leader wanted to modernize its extensive legacy mainframe custody application to make valuable application data accessible across the enterprise.
The business planned to move 44 data files from VSAM to DB2, which they described as an "albatross around their neck.“
After a year of unsuccessful attempts, the client leveraged CPT to help get this highly complicated project over the line.
CPT Global’s Actions
In just over two years, CPT moved all 44 VSAM data files—including their main high-volume transaction files—fully from VSAM to DB2.
To help achieve this, our team leveraged its own proprietary code generator to produce DB2 table structure and data access programs.
CPT continuously identified and overcame deep technical roadblocks inherent in moving between these two technologies, such as uplifting old assembler modules, tailoring complex record locking, and replacing COBOL logic that worked with VSAM but not with DB2.
Since no test environment was available, CPT constructed one from scratch at no additional cost.
Results
- All 44 data files were successfully migrated from VSAM to DB2.
- A proprietary code generator was used to produce DB2 table structure and data access programs.
- Technical roadblocks were overcome, including assembler modules, record locking, and COBOL logic.
- A test environment was constructed from scratch at no additional cost.
CPT Global’s efficient approach delivered on a complex modernization project, unlocking significant operational improvements.
