The July 2025 edition of the EPV Technologies newsletter brings exciting updates on z17 support, AI-powered WLM, and insights into Db2 performance analysis.
Key Highlights:
z17 Support in EPV:
- All EPV V17 products have been updated to support IBM z17.
- Updates for V16 and V15 product versions will follow in the coming weeks.
- Customers planning to install a z17 machine are encouraged to contact EPV Technical Support for assistance.
Db2 Performance Analysis:
- CICS transactions and batch jobs already include CPU time spent inside Db2.
- However, collecting and analyzing SMF 101 records is crucial for detailed insights into CPU and elapsed time within Db2, including suspension times.
- SMF 101 records help identify and address issues by splitting CPU and elapsed time across main tasks, stored procedures, and User Defined Functions.
AI-Powered Workload Manager (WLM):
- With z/OS 3.1, IBM introduces an AI Framework to optimize IT processes, simplify management, and improve performance.
- AI-powered WLM predicts batch workloads and allocates initiators in advance, reducing job wait times.
- Configuration requires the z/OS AI Framework and at least 30 days of historical SMF type 99 subtype 2 data for training.
- Users can enable or disable AI for specific service classes or use simulation mode for testing.
CPT Global views these insights as essential for proactive mainframe optimization and modernization. As EPV's partner, we leverage such detailed performance data and system understanding to help our clients navigate complex environments like the z17, ensuring cost reduction and peak performance.
