Managing Unsupported Software in Mainframe Environments

Written by David Stephens | May 6, 2026 6:15:40 PM

Almost all mainframe sites will have some unsupported software: software with no support from a vendor. This means no bug fixes, no security updates, and no guarantee that the software will work as it is designed or advertised to do. This sounds like a problem.

It is best practice to ensure software is supported, especially mainframe software. At CPT Global, we see sites doing exactly that, and in some cases, taking it even more seriously to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.

But is unsupported software really a problem? What’s more, do you have any options if you have unsupported software? These are the questions I talked about in my GS UK Virtual 2026 presentation, “Let’s Talk About Unsupported Software.”
